Frequently Asked Questions

What does `Quote and Bind` online mean?

It means a quick and simple way to arrange your insurance cover. If you get a quote and decide to arrange insurance and pay for your policy premium on this website by Credit Card your policy documents will be sent to you immediately as downloadable PDFs. From that moment, your policy is live and you are covered.
Insurers don’t send any paper documents unless requested to do so by you but you can print out all policy documents you are sent and retain as a backup.

Alternatively, if you wish to accept the Quote but do not wish to use a Credit Card to pay the policy premium you will be issued with an Invoice and as soon as that Invoice has been settled in full you will be sent a link to the email address you used to obtain the Quote and this will enable you to obtain your policy documents immediately as downloadable PDFs. From that moment, your policy is live and you are covered.

What is covered?

Professional indemnity insurance protects you for sums you are legally obliged to pay as compensation and legal costs to your clients because of problems with your work. The most common causes of claims are:-

  • Negligence - a failure in the duty of care you owe to your client – such as providing incorrect advice or specifying something incorrectly
  • Breach of Contracta failure to meet your written obligations – such as to complete a project by an agreed date
  • Infringement of Intellectual propertythe unintentional infringement of copyrights, trademarks or broadcasting rights
  • Loss of documents or data - includes damaged, missing or stolen software
  • Dishonesty - such as an employee stealing money or transferring funds electronically
  • Libel, slander of defamation

What level of cover should I arrange?

The level of cover has to be decided by you but should take account of: -

  • How large is your contract or project?
  • Does your client require a minimum level of cover?
  • What could be the level of damages awarded against you?

My business is a start-up – can I still get cover?

Yes.

Can cover be arranged for work carried out abroad?

Yes – such work can be covered  - both if you are working in the UK for clients abroad, as well as carrying out work abroad.

Can I increase the level of cover under my policy?

Yes - you can make changes to your policy at any time by contacting us with the relevant details.

Does cover apply if the mistake is made by someone working for me?

Yes - the policy will cover claims arising from mistakes made by employees, sub-contractors, freelancers, consultants or another company. It would be a good idea to require external parties doing work for you to have their own professional indemnity insurance in force so you can claim against them.

What is Property insurance?

It is a package of business insurances designed to protect you on an `All Risks` basis against:-

  • Damage to your property, including office contents furniture, fixtures, windows, computers, servers and so on
  • Loss of money
  • Portable Equipment

Simply select the covers required for your Property when you get a quote online.

What does ‘All Risks’ cover mean?

This means that your property is covered for all types of accidental loss and physical damage unless it’s specifically excluded by the policy. This is wider cover than a ‘specified perils’ policy which only provides cover for specific events – for example theft or fire.

If I work from home, do I need Property insurance?

Not necessarily but check your home insurance policy first. Most policies offer some level of ‘home office’ cover but it may not be as comprehensive as a business insurance policy.

Are my laptop and mobile phones covered?

Yes if you choose to include Portable Equipment cover in your Property insurance to ensure they are properly covered while they are out of your office. Then your laptops, mobile phones and other hand held devices are covered, along with other portables such as visual display equipment. You can insure to the value of £50,000 and the cover operates on a world-wide basis.

Do I need buildings cover if I am renting or leasing my office premises?

No - unless your lease or rental agreement requires you to insure the buildings you occupy.

What types of insurance must a business arrange?

If your business has any employees you must by law have in force Employers’ Liability insurance.  Important - the definition of `employee` includes any temporary or agency worker and any person undertaking work experience.

The Employers’ Liability cover can be arranged along with Public Liability insurance. Public Liability insurance is not a legal requirement to arrange but does provide important protection to your business (for example, if you visit clients' premises, or they visit you, or if you deal with the public) should someone claim that you (or one of your employees) caused them injury or damaged their property.
